Dorothy Roberts

The internationally recognized scholar, public intellectual, and social justice advocate has a B.A. from Yale University, a J.D. from Harvard University and an honorary J.D. from Rutgers University-Newark. She currently holds joint appointments at the University of Pennsylvania as the 14th Penn Integrates Knowledge Professor and George A. Weiss University Professor of Law & Sociology, and as the inaugural Raymond Pace and Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander Professor of Civil Rights. Her TEDMED talk, “The Problem with Race-Based Medicine” has garnered over one million views.

Gerald H. Elkan Distinguished Lecture on Science and Society

The Gerald H. Elkan Distinguished Lecture on Science and Society was established by its namesake’s former students, associates, and friends in honor of Dr. Elkan’s 40-year career as a microbiology professor in NC State’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Dr. Elkan was deeply involved with the Park Scholarships program since its inception in 1997. He worked closely with the Park Scholars of the Class of 2023 to select Nadkarni as the fourth Gerald H. Elkan Distinguished Lecture in Science and Society speaker. Past recipients of the lectureship include water quality engineer Dr. Marc Edward, renowned health policy expert Dr. Nicole Lurie, and award-winning author Thomas Hager.

The Park Scholarships Program

The mission of the Park Scholarships program is to bring exceptional students to NC State, based on outstanding accomplishments and potential in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. The program develops and supports Park Scholars in these areas, preparing them for lifelong contributions to the university, state, nation, and world.

Approximately 40 scholarships will be awarded this year to outstanding entering freshmen for undergraduate study in any discipline at NC State. To date, 23 classes of Park Scholars have graduated and have built a vibrant alumni network.
