In mid-fall, Dr. Ricky Bloomfield ’02 left his position as Director of Mobile Strategy at Duke University to join Apple’s health team. He had been on the forefront of implementing both Apple HealthKit and Apple ResearchKit during his time at Duke.
Jon Clemmons ’08, formerly the assistant general manager for the Asheville Tourists baseball team, is now director of sales for the Down East Wood Ducks. The Wood Ducks, based out of Kinston, N.C., are a Class A Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers.
In early December, Tyler Confrey-Maloney ’13 received the prestigious Voices in Solidarity award for Undercover Colors, the startup he co-founded at NC State. The award, whose past winners include Vice President Joe Biden and actor Patrick Stewart, is the highest honor given to men who have devoted their lives and careers to ending violence against women.
Sydney Grice ’17, a political science major from Richlands, N.C., and Owen Webster ’18, a mechanical engineering and Asian literature and languages major from Clemmons, N.C., were both quoted in a news article about a Ku Klux Klan counter-protest they attended in downtown Raleigh in early December.
Carly Kvietok ’19, a fashion and textile design major from Aurora, Colo., and Sara Lewis ’19, a fashion and textile management major from Goldsboro, N.C., are leading an initiative to provide customized pillowcases to make kids’ stays at the North Carolina Children’s Hospital more comfortable.

As the first-ever director of student philanthropy within NC State Student Government’s Executive Board, Samuel Shain ’19 is helping educate students about the importance of giving back in order to boost the university’s long-term sustainability. Shain, a native of Orinda, Calif., is an international studies major with a concentration in global sustainability and development.
Back in April 2016, FBI taskforce special agent Jacqueline Smith ’06 co-presented a briefing on biosecurity threat awareness at a Women In Bio (WIB) Metro New York chapter networking event. Smith studied microbiology as an undergraduate and, in her current role, focuses on counterterrorism investigations, nonproliferation, outreach to the global scientific community, and WMD threats.

Jasmine Wang ’20 was pictured and Lauren Frey ’17 was quoted in a Technician article highlighting a student-led, post-election demonstration of solidarity held on campus on November 11. Wang is a computer science major from Wilmington, N.C. and Frey is an environmental sciences and women’s and gender studies major from Raleigh. Frey was also quoted in an ABC 11 story.
Austin Bryan ’17, an Africana studies major from Greenville, N.C. and co-organizer of the aforementioned demonstration, was featured in WRAL’s coverage of the event.
Elena Price ’20, a communication major from Raleigh, wrote an op-ed for The Technician.
