We are so excited to welcome Maggie DeWeese ‘18 to the team as the Assistant Director for Enrichment! Maggie will be starting on Jan. 6. She is a Park Scholar in the Class of 2018.
How does it feel to be coming back to work for the Park program? What most excites you about being back at NC State and working in Park Scholarships specifically?
I couldn’t be more excited! NC State is such an incredible campus community filled with students, faculty and staff who want to make the world better. The Park Scholarships program changed the trajectory of my life in many ways, and I can’t wait to work alongside such strong leaders on campus who support (and challenge) one another. I’m also excited to eat at One Earth, explore the new (to me) Target on Hillsborough Street and drink all the 321 Coffee on Centennial Campus.
What will you bring to the Park Scholarships team?
Outside of my experience as a Park Scholar who participated in many of the enrichment activities that current students do, I bring experiences as a school counselor, disability/accommodations support professional and program manager for a summer-long service leadership experience for college students. I have years of experience working with students and employees in various sectors and am excited to use these experiences to promote a meaningful and accessible Park Enrichment Academy.
What are you most excited about with this role?
I am most excited to get to know and learn from current (and future) Park Scholars and to be part of creating meaningful enrichment experiences during their time as NC State students. I am also excited to work with the NC State faculty and staff who are committed to mentoring and supporting Park Scholars. Finally, I’m thrilled to be able to learn from the Park staff, who I have always admired.
What student organizations were you part of as an undergraduate?
I majored in Biological Sciences – Human Biology concentration when I was a student. Outside of classes, I was a race director for the Krispy Kreme Challenge and co-founded a Special Olympics college club. I helped University Recreation begin Unified Intramural Sports so Wake County Special Olympics Athletes and NC State students competed on teams together. I was also a proud Student Wolfpack Club member.
What volunteer/outside organizations are you part of outside of work? Any hobbies or interests?
I am a proud volunteer at StepUp Durham, an organization that provides holistic support to Durham residents seeking sustainable employment. I am a Seattle Seahawks football and huge NC State Wolfpack fan. Outside sports, I love trying to find new coffee shops in the Triangle, putting together puzzles, traveling and listening to music (currently loving Durand Bernarr and every song Cynthia Erivo sang in the Wicked movie).
Anything else you would like the Park community to know about you?
I am eager to learn about you and your experiences with the Park program, specifically the Park Enrichment Academy. I am also excited to hear your recommendations for the best things to do in the Triangle, as I have only been back for a couple years and have so much more to learn about the area. I look forward to connecting with you, whether you email me, stop by my office or we schedule time to meet.
