Alumni gathered together for finalist weekend, where the 11th class of Park Scholars was selected.
During the weekend of February 17 and 18, Park alumni came from near and far to assist with finalist weekend activities and attend a PAS open meeting and mixer. On Saturday, alumni interviewed potential scholars and assisted with group assessment tasks. Afterwards, many gathered at the Southend Brewery in downtown Raleigh.
At the meeting, alumni were given a brief update on board activities and upcoming elections were announced. Kelly Marks (2000) and Jodee Ruppel (2005) presented new information about the current Park fundraiser (see the campaign’s current progress here). Kim Bloomfield (2002) also discussed plans for future alumni/scholar dinners beginning with the 2006-2007 academic year.
Also in attendance was park office staff, Eva Feucht (2002), Chaffee Viets and Laura Lunsford, as well as Park friends professors Art Padilla and Gerald Elkan.
Park Class of 2010 Announced
On March 3, NC State announced 50 students as Park Scholars for fall 2006. The scholarship winners were selected from among 950 applicants.
Among the winners are a bluegrass guitar player, a published researcher, a U.S. Olympic Committee FLAME award winner, a state champion high jumper and a writer for the Greensboro News & Record. The recipients have served their communities in a variety of ways, from founding organizations such as Tales for Tots, a book drive for underprivileged children, to reading to the blind at WFFS-FM in Fayetteville, N.C.
Scholars were selected on the basis of academic achievement; personal characteristics such as character, integrity and motivation; exceptional leadership potential; and commitment to the betterment of one’s community.
