At the age of 19, Darryl Hunt was wrongfully convicted of the 1984 murder of 25-year-old Deborah Sykes due to eyewitness misidentification and unreliable informants. While DNA evidence proved his innocence in 1994, the long appeal process resulted in Hunt spending an additional ten years in prison. In 2005, Hunt founded the Darryl Hunt Project for Freedom and Justice to provide resources for those wrongfully convicted, and to assist with reintegration of individuals upon their release.
Hunt will discuss issues of wrongful conviction, criminal justice, and resources for those released from prison. Following his presentation, Dr. Richard Rosen, professor emeritus at UNC School of Law and founder of UNC law school’s Innocence and Capital Punishment Projects, will speak briefly about criminal and capital punishment law. A short Q&A session and light refreshments will follow.
