We are thrilled to welcome Hannah Graham to the Park team! Hannah will be working with the Park Scholarships, Goodnight Scholars Program and Caldwell Fellows Program as the embedded counselor. We will be updating Scholars soon about how they can connect with Hannah.
Tell us a little bit about yourself!
My name is Hannah Graham and I’m the embedded counselor for Park Scholars, as well as Goodnight Scholars Program and Caldwell Fellows. I earned my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work at NC State, so you could say I’m very loyal to the Pack. I have a background in inpatient mental health, as well as private practice mental health therapy. I’m excited to offer individual counseling, “Let’s Talk” consultations, and be a connection to other counseling services and resources on campus!
What led you to specialize in student mental health, and what drew you specifically to the Park Scholarships program?
Throughout my practice in mental health thus far, I have continually found myself being drawn to working with students! Students today experience such a variety of life stressors and I look forward to gaining the opportunity to connect with and support them by offering counseling, skills and support. I was specifically drawn to working with scholars because of the intentional focus on supporting high-achieving students while also recognizing the unique pressures that accompany their experiences. I appreciate NC State’s approach of supporting students not only academically, but also personally.
If a student is feeling overwhelmed but isn’t sure if they need counseling or support, what would you say to them?
I would first acknowledge that feeling overwhelmed is a common experience, especially in competitive academic environments like NC State and it’s okay to not know what kind of support you might need or benefit from just yet! Connecting with a counselor can help provide a clearer picture of what the actual difficulties and potential solutions are. I want to make sure students know that seeking out support is a strength.
What are three things students might be surprised to learn about you?
Three things students might be surprised to learn about me are that I really enjoy getting to know students beyond academics (tell me what fun hobbies you’re interested in!). I’m a big fan of fidget toys for focus and grounding, and although I take my role seriously I also believe support doesn’t have to feel stiff. I believe in laughter, honesty and self expression in the therapeutic space!
What is the first thing you want a student to feel when they walk into your office for the first time?
I want students to feel like they are able to take a deep breath whenever they walk into my office. My hope is that my space feels safe and welcoming.
