2,300 to Volunteer for Service Raleigh 2010

More than 2,300 volunteers will complete over 95 projects in Raleigh on Saturday, March 27 as part of the 13th annual Service Raleigh. John Leshney, Senior Vice President of Development for The V Foundation for Cancer Research, will be the keynote speaker at the morning kickoff that begins at 7:30 am on Harris Field on NC State University’s campus.

Service Raleigh is NC State’s largest student-run philanthropic project, started in 1998 by the Park Scholars and Student Government. Volunteers will work on the beautification of 12 city parks, clean up 5 local lakes and creeks, visit with senior citizens at several area assisted living facilities, clean several miles of roads, landscape at 7 local elementary schools, and plant trees across the city, among other projects.

According to Brandee Woolard ‘11, one of the co-chairs for this year’s event, “We are delighted to see a significant increase in this year’s volunteer numbers. NC State students will join with many volunteers from the local community in an effort to give back to the City of Raleigh, and many nonprofit organizations and citizens in need will benefit from their efforts.”
