posted 2012.01.25

The Park Scholarships program at North Carolina State University has named 105 Finalists for the Class of 2016.

A total of 235 Semifinalists were interviewed in early January by approximately 170 NC State alumni who comprise the Park Scholarships Selection Committee. The Semifinalists were selected from nearly 1,500 applications submitted by the November 1 deadline.

Finalists include recipients of the Congressional Award Gold Medal, President’s Volunteer Service Award, National High School Mathematical League Championship Award, and National Classical Etymology Exam Gold Medal; founders of nonprofits organizations that provide footwear to residents of Haiti and Togo, work towards political and social equality for women, and have awarded nearly $30,000 for school technology infrastructure grants; researchers in the areas of bacterial quorum sensing and the Martian planetary system; and individuals who have served as pages in the United State House of Representatives and North Carolina Senate, interned with the Air Force Research Laboratory, and created a glassblowing business.

The Finalists will visit the NC State campus on February 17-18 to participate in Final Selection Activities at the Dorothy and Roy Park Alumni Center. These activities will include individual interviews, a group discussion task, and panels with faculty and Park Scholars. Finalists and their guests will also attend a dinner hosted by NC State Chancellor Randy Woodson where former North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt will present the keynote address.

The Park Scholarships program brings exceptional students to NC State University, based on outstanding accomplishments and potential in scholarship, leadership, service, and character. The program develops and supports Park Scholars in these areas, preparing them for lifelong contributions to the campus, state, nation, and world. The scholarship includes tuition and fees, room and board, enrichment activities, and additional expenses.

The Park Scholarships are named for the late Roy H. Park ‘31, an NC State alumnus who created the charitable Park Foundation, dedicated to education, media, and the environment. Approximately 45 scholarships are awarded each year to outstanding high school seniors for undergraduate study in any discipline at NC State.
